Patient Consultation
During your initial visit, your physiatrist will complete a thorough physical exam, and ask a variety of questions to gain a better understanding of your unique conditions.
Diagnostic Imaging
Your physiatrist may order diagnostic imaging including:
- X-Ray
- MRI
- EMG (electromyography)
- NCS (nerve conduction studies)
Minimally invasive pain management procedures
While our long term approach is exercised based, we also want to ensure that we can help you alleviate acute pain as soon as possible. This will also put you in a better position to be begin your long term rehabilitation.
All of our minimally invasive procedures are performed at the Peninsula Procedure Center in Redwood City. Commonly prescribed procedures include:
- Epidural Injections (Cervical, Thoracic, Lumbar)
- Nerve Blocks
- Spinal Joint Blocks
- Injections
- Rhizotomy
- IDET (intradiscal electrothermal therapy)
- Percutaneous Discectomy
Procedures may be indicated at various intervals throughout your rehabilitation.
Long term rehabilitation plan
Physiatry promotes an exercise-based approach to long term rehabilitation.
Scientific studies clearly validate that specific spine stabilizing exercises can be an effective treatment for a variety of spinal conditions, and can help prevent recurrences. Additionally, education regarding posture and body mechanics has been shown to reduce work place injuries and disability.
